Crime stats: Murder, sexual crimes rise

JOHANNESBURG – The national crime statistics have been released with some worrying statistics immediately standing out.

South Africa’s murder rate has increased by 5,8 percent compared with the previous year.

The South African Police Service’s Major General Norman Sekhukhune briefed Parliament.

While contact crime (crimes committed against a person) have generally decreased, murder, sexual crimes and attempted murder have all seen increases.

Seven of the 10 stations with the highest number of reported murders are in Cape Town. Nyanga, Philippi East, Delft, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Gugulethu and Mfuleni are the stations on the list.

Nyanga leads in murder cases with 308 murders reported in the area, up from 281 in the year before.

The Western Cape recorded 808 gang-related murders, followed by the Eastern Cape with 87.

Umlazi takes the second spot with 223 murders (up from 187 the previous year) and Philippi East is third with 205.

Gauteng has the most taxi-related murders as well as mob violence murders, followed by Western Cape and KZN.

National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole responded to the disappointing crime statistics by saying: “We dropped the ball. We are 62,000 members short.

“We are increasing specialised units, task forces, neighbourhood watch mobilisation and women and children units.”
