JOHANNESBURG – The installation of CCTV cameras in the suburbs have been labelled as a possible game-changer in the fight against crime.
Last year’s crime stats show that Gauteng is the leading province in terms of reported robberies, and is in the top two when it comes to burglaries in residential areas.
According to recent crime statistics, 625 houses were burgled in the year under review but the fight against this crime just got a major boost.
About 15 000 of the state-of-the-art cameras will be rolled out throughout Johannesburg over the next 12 months.
It’s hoped the deployment of these ultra-high definition CCTV cameras will make the work of keeping South Africans safe that much easier.
There are 889 cameras in 48 suburbs. Security companies pay a subscription fee for a feed.
The police have welcomed the initiative as they use CCTV in their investigations.
The cameras have a licence plate recognition (LPR) service that scans about 480 vehicle plates per minute against multiple databases like the SA police’s stolen vehicles list.
With the reality of load-shedding, the company faces a problem but they say they have back-ups in place.
The proof of its success though will be revealed in the next round of statistics.
