Hawks arrest 7 traffic officials for fraud, corruption

Cape Town – The Hawks have arrested seven suspects at the Khayelitsha Driving Licence Testing Centre.

The six staff members and the security guard were arrested on Wednesday morning and are due to appear in court on fraud and corruption charges .

According to the Mayoral Committee member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith, i nternal disciplinary processes will run parallel to the criminal process.

“The staff members will be served with pre-suspension notices once they have appeared in court. We have a zero-tolerance approach to staff misconduct and thank the Hawks for helping the City to ensure we run a clean administration,” said Smith in a statement.

The arrests follow a number of raids and is part of a pre-festive season crackdown and anti-corruption drive as twelve officials were arrested earlier this week in two provinces.

They were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo on allegations of fraud and contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act.
