CAPE TOWN – There have been several execution-style killings caught on CCTV in South Africa lately.

There is now speculation about whether they are gang-related hits or linked to bigger international organised criminal networks.

Brazen killings in broad daylight like the one in Cape Town and in Bryanston in Johannesburg – have people wondering if assassinations are on the rise.

Police are reluctant to call either incident a hit, saying they can’t speculate on the motives for the killings until their investigations gain momentum.

They also can’t say whether or not there’s been a significant increase in these kinds of crimes.

Experts say in many cases it’s clear specific people are being targeted, with a slow and incapacitated police force enabling such crimes.

Research done by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, shows a steady upward trend in targeted killings, mostly in the taxi industry.

Political killings and organised crime hits, come in second and third.

In the Caltex case in Cape Town, 4 suspects have been arrested and are facing murder charges, while a manhunt is still underway for the suspects in the Bryanston shooting.
